Bruja Is Evolving: A New Publishing Rhythm for 2027 | Announcements

Fewer print issues. More room for art, writing, and the work that deserves our attention.

Bruja has always been a magazine built from many things at once. Art and photography live beside poetry, spirituality, ritual, fashion, essays, and stories from people whose work deserves space to breathe. Bringing those pieces together into a physical magazine has been one of the most rewarding parts of creating Bruja, but producing a thoughtful print publication requires something that cannot be rushed: time.

As Bruja has grown, so has the work behind each issue. Every submission has to be reviewed. Contributors need to be interviewed and communicated with. Images must be selected, writing edited, pages designed, credits checked, and dozens of individual pieces shaped into something that feels like a single world rather than a collection of unrelated work.

We have decided that the answer is not to produce more. It is to become more intentional about what we produce.

Beginning in 2027, Bruja Magazine will move to two major print editions each year, accompanied by two smaller seasonal digital editions and our continuing online publication.

This gives each printed issue the time it deserves while allowing Bruja to remain active, curious, and constantly evolving throughout the year.

March: Veris Sacra

Our first major print edition of the year will arrive in March.

Veris Sacra — Awakening & Becoming explores rebirth, emergence, fertility, creation, renewal, and the body returning to life. Named for the idea of a sacred spring, the issue looks toward what begins moving again after dormancy.

Spring is often romanticized as an effortless return to beauty, but becoming is rarely that simple. Seeds have to split before they grow. New identities emerge from old ones. Desire returns to bodies that may have spent months or years learning how to protect themselves.

Veris Sacra will be a print and digital edition, giving us the space to create a substantial collection of art, photography, poetry, fashion, ritual, nature, and storytelling around the complicated beauty of beginning again.

May: Floralia

As spring reaches its fullest expression, Bruja will move into Floralia — Desire & Bloom, a seasonal digital edition inspired by flowers, fertility, pleasure, beauty, love, sensuality, and abundance.

Named for the ancient Roman festival of Flora, Floralia will explore what happens after emergence, when life is no longer merely returning but blooming.

This edition gives us room to become lush. Botanical art, floral fashion, love stories, poetry, gardens, sensuality, beauty rituals, Beltane traditions, creative abundance, and the relationship between pleasure and the sacred all belong here.

Floralia will be published digitally, allowing the edition to feel immediate and seasonal without requiring every Bruja collection to become a physical object.

August: Messis

By August, the year has changed again.

Messis — Harvest & Abundance will become our late-summer seasonal digital edition, exploring nourishment, labor, land, food, home, preservation, creativity, and the complicated question of what it means to have enough.

Messis is Latin for harvest, and the edition takes inspiration from the first harvest traditions of late summer. This is the moment when we begin looking at what actually grew from everything we planted earlier in the year.

The harvest is not simply about abundance. It is also an accounting. Some things flourished. Others failed. Some required far more work than expected, while something planted almost casually may have become unexpectedly abundant.

Through art, food, herbal traditions, domestic craft, photography, writing, ritual, fashion, and stories of land and labor, Messis will celebrate what we make, cultivate, preserve, and carry forward.

November 1: Regnum Umbrae

And then we descend.

Every November 1, Regnum Umbrae will return as Bruja Magazine's annual journey into the Realm of Shadows and our second major print and digital edition of the year.

Rather than replacing our autumn identity with a different theme every year, Regnum Umbrae will become a Bruja tradition. Its larger world remains rooted in darkness, transformation, mortality, memory, mystery, and the unseen, while each year can explore a different chamber within that realm.

The 2026 edition, Regnum Umbrae: Descent & Transformation, begins that tradition. In 2027, The Ancestral Realm will turn our attention toward lineage, inheritance, memory, family mythology, generational wounds, and the ways the dead continue to inhabit the lives of those who remain.

November 1 will belong to Regnum Umbrae.

Bruja Will Continue Between the Issues

Changing our print schedule does not mean Bruja disappears between editions. Quite the opposite.

The Bruja website is becoming its own living publication rather than simply a place to announce the next magazine. Throughout the year, we will continue publishing original writing and poetry, spirituality and astrology, practical magic, art, fashion, home design, photography, interviews, cultural features, and work from contributors around the world.

This gives us the freedom to respond to seasons, artists, exhibitions, ideas, traditions, and conversations while they are happening instead of holding everything for the next printed issue.

Some work belongs on paper.

Some work belongs to the moment.

Bruja should have room for both.

Why We Are Making the Change

Independent publishing can easily become consumed by the demand to constantly produce something new. There is always another issue to prepare, another deadline approaching, another collection waiting to be assembled.

We do not want Bruja to become a machine that produces magazines simply because the calendar says it is time.

We want the physical editions to matter.

Moving to two major print publications each year allows us to spend more time with the artists and writers whose work fills them. It gives us greater freedom to develop thoughtful editorial concepts, conduct interviews, refine layouts, and create issues that feel worth keeping after the season in which they were published has passed.

Meanwhile, our seasonal digital editions allow us to experiment without requiring every idea to become another large production.

This is not less Bruja.

It is a more sustainable Bruja.

The New Rhythm

Beginning in 2027, the year will move through four distinct Bruja worlds:

March — Veris Sacra: Awakening & Becoming

May — Floralia: Desire & Bloom
Seasonal Digital Edition

August — Messis: Harvest & Abundance
Seasonal Digital Edition

November 1 — Regnum Umbrae
Major Print + Digital Edition

Four seasons. Four distinct editorial worlds. Two objects made to be held and kept. Two editions allowed to live entirely in the digital space. Between them, Bruja will continue publishing throughout the year.

We are not interested in filling space for the sake of filling it.

We would rather make fewer physical things and make them beautifully.

That is the rhythm we are carrying into 2027.
