“A Boulder in My Body” — Eating to Heal the Root Chakra

I’ve always known something was off in my root.

You know the kind of knowing that doesn’t just whisper—it pulses. It settles into your bones. That’s what my root chakra has felt like for years: not a swirling red vortex, but a boulder lodged at the center of my body.

The root chakra—Muladhara—is the energy of safety, survival, belonging, and stability. It’s our base. Our foundation. And mine? Mine has been cracked wide open by trauma, by instability, by grief, by the relentless need to survive. I was not born into safety. I was not handed stability. I’ve had to build it brick by brick with hands that were still shaking. And somewhere along the way, I became sacral-dominant—fluid, emotional, creative. My sacral chakra knew how to dance even when my root couldn’t stand.

Recently, during a healing session, a friend tried to help me shift the blockage. As soon as she laid hands on me, my body shook. Hers vibrated in response. We both felt it—this thick, unmoving energy sitting heavy, refusing to budge. That was my root, fighting to stay locked in its pain.

But I’m done carrying this weight. I’m done letting old survival energy hijack my now.

So I’m starting something new. A series on eating by the chakras—beginning, of course, with the root. Because sometimes healing doesn’t start in the stars or the spirit. Sometimes it starts with what’s on your plate.

I’m talking about grounding foods. Earth foods. Blood-building, body-anchoring nourishment. Beets, red lentils, sweet potatoes, root vegetables, dark leafy greens. Warm teas with cinnamon or ginger. Bone broth. Plantains. Things that pull you back into your skin. Foods that say: “It’s safe to stay.”

And I’ll be honest with you—this isn’t just a lifestyle blog or some Pinterest-worthy recipe list. This is survival work. This is how we call our soul back into our body after it’s been exiled by trauma. This is how we say to our nervous system, “I see you. I’m listening. I’m not abandoning you this time.”

If you’re like me—if your root has been wounded by instability, abuse, generational disconnection, or simply the hard truth of being born too sensitive into a world that doesn’t know how to hold you—then you’re not alone. I’m creating this series for us. For the wild ones trying to ground. For the brujas trying to reclaim safety. For the women who’ve learned to float because standing still has always felt dangerous.

We’re going to re-root—one meal at a time.

More soon. I’ll be sharing recipes, rituals, and reflections as I move through this healing in real-time.

And if your root chakra is fucked too?

Welcome. Let’s get grounded.
